Back Exercises

There are several back exercises that you can do in the comfort of your own home that will greatly reduce the risk of back pain.

Lie on your back on the ground with a rolled up towel under your lumber region.

Place both feet flat on the ground with your knees together.

Swing your knees to the right and hold for 5 seconds, then back to centre.

Swing your knees to the left and hold for 5 seconds, then back to centre.

Do this 5 times.

Then do the same exercises but only use one leg at a time, i.e. when moving to the right, only use your right leg, keep the left leg in the middle.  Then do the same with the opposite leg.

Once you've done those, put both knees together again and bring them as close to your chest as possible without causing pain, hold for 5 seconds and back to centre. Do this 5 times and then rest.

You can do these exercises as often as you want but once a day, probably in the morning after getting out of bed, would be best.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Resolved Question: Extreme Lower Back Pain!!!?

I'm 13, so this may be a little unusual. For the past 4 months about, I have had some pretty intense back pain. Whenever I sit down from walking, and I go to relax my back, I get very strong back pain. It's right by my left kidney so I'm not sure if that helps at all. Also, when I run or jog, it's ok, but when I stop running or jogging, that's when it hurts, and I can barley even walk. I'm not really sure what it is but I think it's from sitting in my chair in front of my computer. I have a wood chair with no cushioning so maybe it's from sitting for long amounts of time. It's better when I wake up from sleeping, but anytime from that, it hurts a lot. It doesn't hurt when I'm doing the activites, it's only when I stop. - 44 hours ago

  • Resolved Question: Back pain, cramping, brown discharge...7 weeks pregnant?

Last night I went to the ER for back pain, yellowish/brown discharge and cramping. They did a pelvic exam, tested my blood and did an ultrasound. They said everything was good and where it was supposed to be. But all day today I've had like a watery brown discharge along with period like cramps and a backache. Should I worry since the doctor said I was fine last night? Is this normal at all? - 2 days ago
